If you’re a verbal learner you like to read. You like words and like learning new ones. You enjoy language and reading. You will be an organised person and very neat and tidy. In class you will take lots of notes and you’ll like writing out answers and learning them off. You need peace and quiet in order to study.

Some learning strategies for the verbal learner:

  • Read the textbook and class notes
  • Rewrite things in your own words
  • Stay organised
  • Use flash cards with questions and answers

If you’re a visual leaner you will like images: pictures and movies. You will be attracted to strong colours and you like to visualise things in your mind. When you’re in class you will like the textbook that has a lot of illustrations. You will close your eyes to ‘see’ information you have learned. You will probably be good at reading maps.

Some learning strategies for the visual learner:

  • Make out posters with the things you need to learn
  • Use bulleted points
  • Use flash cards

Auditory Learning Style

Auditory

If you’re an auditory learner you like to listen. You will like music and you will often hum or sing. You like to chat and talk things through and are happy in company. You enjoy class for the companionship of your fiends. You are social and outgoing.

Some learning strategies for the auditory learner:

  • Listen more than you write in class
  • Get a friend to ask you the questions
  • Discuss the topic with classmates
  • Form a study group
  • Recall class notes in your own words
  • Read notes aloud

Kinaesthetic Learning Style

Kinaesthetic

If you’re a kinaesthetic learner you like to do things. You like working with your hands and probably dislike reading. You have a lot of energy and like to stay active. You like sport and practical things like gardening. You like practical subjects like art, home economics, woodwork and metal work.

Some learning strategies for the kinaesthetic learner:

  • Get out of the classroom and go on field trips and visits
  • Use real life examples to bring the learning alive
  • Do things with your hands: so try that experiment yourself
  • Cut up notes and piece them back together
  • Discuss the topic in a group
  • Watch a DVD, Youtube or your teacher doing the task involved
  • Make a scrapbook of your notes with pictures in the margins
  • Role play
